I just got back from a research trip to Haines, AK where I helped outfit five bald eagles with GPS backpacks so that we can track their migration routes.
Bald eagles are large birds (4-7 kg; or 9-14 lbs) and their large size is particularly evident when you have them in your hands. They are incredibly strong and their talons and beaks are weapons that demand respect. Luckily though, once you put a hood over their heads, most eagles calm down greatly and become very docile to handle.

Arriving from Juneau on the ferry!
Working the net, snapping gills, and cutting flesh…
…and eating flesh. With Al from Wisconsin, where he hunted this venison.
Fresh sockeye we caught yesterday:
Tamir asked if we could defrost some black bear sausages so they can try it before they leave. Yiwei suggested making spaghetti and meatballs.
So to sum up the food we’ve eaten with Tamwei in 3 days:
Sockeye and pink salmon, halibut, dungeness crab and venison.
