Predation at UC Santa Cruz
I haven’t posted a picture from UC Santa Cruz for a while. But here are some nice game camera shots of bobcats taking their lunch for a walk! Photos from Mike Bolte and Alex Jones.

Recently, we got some photos and videos (from Max Allen) of bobcat moms and their kittens in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Although it’s pretty easy to see bobcats, it’s really hard to see them with kittens. Read more at santacruzpumas.org

Predator and Prey Part 2. My camera got this great picture of a bobcat getting ready to pounce! See if you can find its intended victim in the photo. Bobcats are very important small mammal predators in communities. In parts of the east coast where my friend Taal works, bobcats are still very rare because they haven’t recovered from the fur trade yet.
Woodrats play an important role in the ecosystem and serve as food for many predators. This bobcat was coming by with woodrats quite often in the last month - probably because she had some kittens (picture coming!)

Watch out Franz Lanting! New wildlife photographers are on the loose in the Santa Cruz Mountains!
